Ratchet Strap FAQs

  • What is a ratchet strap?
  • A ratchet strap is a sturdy textile strap with a ratchet tensioner for fastening. Ratchet straps are commonly used to secure loads on lorries, vans, flatbed trucks, etc. This helps to ensure that cargo doesn't move around or fall off the vehicle during transportation.

  • What are ratchet straps made of?
  • Most ratchet straps are made of durable polyester webbing. The material has to be very strong because there will potentially be several hundred daN (decanewtons) of tension in the strap during transportation.

  • How do ratchet straps work?
  • Ratchet straps work by applying force to a load to keep it in place. The strap may be placed over the top of the load or directly connected to it. Tension is then applied by manually cranking the handle of the ratchet mechanism. This tension is what prevents the load from moving around while in transit (although an anti-slip mat can also help with this by creating extra friction between the load and the surface underneath it).

See How to Use a Ratchet Strap for a more detailed explanation of how ratchet lashings work.

  • How can I avoid damaging my ratchet straps?
  • The best way to avoid damaging your ratchet straps is to use wear sleeves and corner protectors to keep the webbing from rubbing against sharp edges and abrasive surfaces. See How to Prevent Lashing Webbing Damage for more information on looking after your ratchet lashing straps and preventing premature failure.

  • What are the different types of ratchet strap hook?
  • There are many different types of ratchet strap hook, including:

    • Claw hooks
    • S-hooks
    • Chassis hooks
    • Closed rave hooks
    • Flat snap hooks
    • Twisted snap hooks

Ratchet tie down straps with all of these different hook types are available to order from Tensys Direct. Feel free to contact us if you can't find the specific type of ratchet strap you need.
