There are two distinct types of loadbinders: ratchet loadbinders and lever loadbinders.
- Lever loadbinders are tightened using a simple lever, with a tension hook on each end. They require the person installing the binder to apply a fair amount of force in order to tighten and secure the chain properly. These loadbinders tend to be faster to operate, however require significant physical strength to lock down and pose a risk of "kick back" or injury if not handled properly.
- Ratchet loadbinders have two tension hooks on each end and a handle that serves as a lever. These loadbinders require much less pulling force than lever loadbinders, allowing the user to tighten chains to the desired tension without excessive physical effort. Ratchet loadbinders are generally considered safer because they do not "kick back" if released.
