What Is a Point Load?

Shoring pole and anchor track

A point load is when the weight of a heavy load is acting on one specific point instead of being spread across a wider area.

For example, if you were to place a bulky object on the centre of a beam, that would be a point load because one spot is taking all of the weight.

When lifting or transporting heavy loads, you will generally want to avoid point loading as it can cause lifting equipment and load restraints to fail prematurely. Try to distribute large weights as evenly as possible so as not to put too much stress on a single point.

How to avoid point loads when using shoring bars

When using shoring bars to prevent cargo from moving around in the back of your van, a point load may occur if the weight of the load is concentrated on one part of the bar. This can cause the bar to weaken and break, especially if the movement of the vehicle causes the load to repeatedly bump against that one spot.

To minimise the risk of shoring bar failure, try to position the load so that its weight is spread across the entire length of the bar. You should also take care to fit the bar as close to the load as possible, leaving no space for the load to move around.
